What is partial knee replacement done with?

A partial replacement resurfaces the worn part of the knee rather than replacing every joint surface. The metal component covers the prepared bone, while a shaped polyethylene bearing provides a smooth low-friction surface between the implant parts. Cobalt-chrome alloy is used in many metal components because it is hard and suitable for a joint implant. Highly cross-linked polyethylene is engineered to resist wear. The final design and fixation method depend on the affected compartment, ligament condition, bone quality, and the surgeon's assessment.

Tell the surgical team about allergies, dental or skin infections, medicines, and previous joint operations. Plan for wound care, transport, and exercises after discharge. Use walking aids as instructed, keep the incision protected, and gradually practise the movements recommended by your physiotherapist. Attend reviews even if the knee feels better, because progress is assessed through movement, stability, wound appearance, and function.

Contact your care team for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, persistent wound leakage, or pain and swelling that are getting worse. Seek urgent help for sudden breathlessness or chest pain, marked calf swelling, a cold or discoloured foot, or new loss of movement or sensation.
