What Happens After Subcision?

Subcision uses a needle or similar instrument beneath a depressed scar to loosen fibrous bands that pull the surface down. Once those bands are released, the skin may look fuller, swollen, or irregular before the early reaction settles. Bruising can follow the needle path, and pressure or tenderness may be noticeable when the area is touched.

The immediate appearance is not the final assessment of scar improvement. Your clinician may review the skin after healing and decide whether another approach, such as acne scar laser treatment, would address remaining texture or color concerns.

Use only the dressing, cleanser, or ointment recommended for your treatment site. Avoid vigorous massage, strenuous activity, heat exposure, and products that sting until your clinician says they are suitable. Do not press, pierce, or squeeze a bruise or lump. Protect healing skin from strong sunlight and attend the planned review so the response can be assessed before further procedures.

Call the treating clinic if swelling or pain is worsening rather than settling, the skin becomes hot and increasingly red, or there is drainage, a persistent open area, or a new firm lump. Seek urgent help for facial swelling with breathing difficulty, severe pain with color change, or symptoms affecting vision. These findings may signal a complication that needs direct examination.

Ask which changes are expected for your scar location, how to clean and protect the puncture sites, and when normal exercise or skincare can resume. Clarify whether your scar is tethered, when improvement will be judged, and what findings would make another session or a different treatment appropriate.
