What does return-to-sport programme treat?

Short answer
A return-to-sport programme treats movement, strength, control, and confidence problems that remain after sports injuries or surgery.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main goal
- Restore sport-specific function and manage load safely
- May include
- Strength, running, landing, balance, and reaction drills
What it treats
A return-to-sport programme treats movement, strength, control, and confidence problems that remain after sports injuries or surgery. It may support recovery after an ACL tear, MCL injury, groin strain, hamstring strain, Achilles tendon repair, or ACL reconstruction. The plan is matched to the sport, position, injury, healing stage, and current function.
How the programme works
Rehabilitation usually progresses from basic movement and strength to running, landing, cutting, reaction drills, and sport-specific practice. The clinician watches technique, symptoms, balance, power, and how the body responds after loading. Isokinetic strength testing may compare muscle performance under controlled conditions and help identify work still needed.
How to take part
Follow the agreed progression and report swelling, sharp pain, instability, or a change in walking or running. Complete home exercises with the recommended form, while allowing recovery between harder sessions. Return to training may be staged, with modified drills before unrestricted practice. Meeting a calendar date alone does not show that the body is ready.
When to seek care
Contact your rehabilitation team if symptoms increase after a progression or if the injured joint repeatedly gives way. Seek urgent assessment for a new deformity, severe swelling, a locked joint, loss of sensation, or sudden inability to bear weight. After surgery, follow the operating team's instructions for wound, fever, or calf symptoms.
Questions for your doctor
Which tests will guide my next stage? What sport-specific tasks must I perform safely? How will strength and fatigue be monitored? When can I add contact, sprinting, or competition?
