What Does Light Sensitivity Feel Like With Conjunctivitis?

Short answer
Light Sensitivity is a common presentation of Conjunctivitis, and may feel like uncomfortable glare, stinging or an urge to close the eyes in ordinary indoor or outdoor light.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Light may feel
- Harsh, glaring, stinging or difficult to tolerate
- Possible companions
- Redness, watering, grittiness or discharge
- Avoid
- Rubbing eyes and sharing towels or cosmetics
How the discomfort can present
Light may seem unusually harsh, even when it is not bright to other people. You might squint, blink more, keep one eye partly closed or prefer a dim room. Redness, gritty irritation, watering, discharge and swollen eyelids can accompany the sensitivity. The eye surface is inflamed, so light reaching it can feel more irritating. Conjunctivitis may affect one or both eyes and can have infectious, allergic or irritant causes. Light sensitivity that is intense, isolated or linked with significant pain needs a different assessment because not every light-sensitive eye has conjunctivitis.
Ways to reduce irritation
Rest your eyes away from harsh screens and bright light, and use sunglasses outdoors if they make you more comfortable. A cool, clean compress may soothe closed eyelids. Wash hands before and after touching the eyes, avoid rubbing, and do not share towels or eye cosmetics. Contact lenses should be removed until an eye professional says they can be worn again. Do not use someone else’s drops; ask a pharmacist or clinician which product fits the symptoms.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt eye care for severe pain, blurred or reduced vision, marked swelling, injury, a chemical splash or strong sensitivity that makes it hard to open the eye. Contact-lens wearers with redness, pain or light sensitivity should be assessed promptly because corneal problems can worsen quickly. Emergency care is appropriate for sudden vision loss or a new severe headache with eye symptoms. Seek advice if discharge persists or symptoms are not improving.
Questions for your doctor
Does the pattern fit infectious, allergic or irritant conjunctivitis? Should I stop contact lenses or any eye products? What symptoms would suggest a corneal problem? How should I clean discharge and reduce the chance of spreading infection?

Questions people ask
Can conjunctivitis make normal light feel too bright?
Yes. Eye-surface inflammation can make ordinary light feel harsh and may cause squinting, watering or an urge to close the eyes.
Is light sensitivity with a red eye always conjunctivitis?
No. Severe pain, vision change or strong light sensitivity can signal another eye problem and should be assessed promptly.
