What does falls prevention programme treat?

Short answer

A falls prevention programme treats modifiable fall risks such as poor balance, leg weakness, unsafe walking patterns, and difficulty managing everyday environments.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Core targets
Balance, leg strength, walking, and transfers
Home focus
Lighting, clear paths, rails, and safe footwear

What the programme addresses

Assessment may look at balance, leg strength, walking speed, transfers, vision, footwear, dizziness, medicines, and hazards at home. Exercises can practise stepping, turning, rising from a chair, climbing, and reacting when balance shifts. The programme may be especially useful when sarcopenia reduces muscle reserve or when osteoporosis makes preventing a fall particularly valuable because bones may be more vulnerable to injury.

A therapist can also review walking aids and show how to use them safely. The plan is tailored to what caused previous near-falls or falls, rather than relying on one routine for everyone.

Practical steps

Wear supportive footwear, keep walkways clear, improve lighting, and use handrails where recommended. Practise prescribed exercises regularly near a stable support, with another person present if your therapist advises it. Rise slowly if you feel light-headed, and report repeated dizziness or medication-related drowsiness for clinical review. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment after a fall, repeated near-falls, or a new change in walking or balance. Seek urgent care after a fall involving severe pain, inability to stand, a head impact, confusion, or suspected fracture. Emergency help is needed for new one-sided weakness, fainting, chest pain, or sudden trouble speaking.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which risks are contributing to your falls, whether your medicines or vision need review, and which exercises are safe. Discuss footwear, walking aids, home changes, and how family members can support practice without taking away your independence.

Questions people ask

Is a falls prevention programme only for people who have already fallen?

No. It can also help when someone has poor balance, near-falls, weakness, or fear of falling.

Why does osteoporosis matter when preventing falls?

Osteoporosis can weaken bones, so avoiding falls and improving safe movement can help reduce injury risk.
