What does an AMH test treat?

AMH is produced by small follicles in the ovaries. The result gives an estimate of the remaining pool of follicles, but it does not count eggs directly or show egg quality. It also cannot by itself confirm infertility, predict exactly when menopause will begin, or tell whether pregnancy will occur.

A clinician interprets the result alongside age, menstrual history, ultrasound findings and other fertility information. A result that suggests diminished ovarian reserve may lead to a discussion about fertility options, while a higher result can sometimes be seen with polycystic ovary features and needs context.

Take the report to a fertility or gynaecology clinician who can explain what it means for your personal goals. If you are trying to conceive, the next step may include ovarian assessment, semen testing for a partner and discussion of treatment choices. Ovarian stimulation may be considered in selected fertility plans; it is separate from the blood test.

Do not start supplements or fertility medicines because of an AMH result alone. Keep a record of your cycle pattern, previous pregnancies, operations and medicines so the consultation is focused.

Arrange a clinical review if the result is unexpected, you have irregular or absent periods, or conception has taken longer than expected. Seek urgent care for severe pelvic pain, fainting or heavy bleeding, because these symptoms need assessment and are not explained by AMH alone.
