What Does a Sprained Wrist Feel Like?

Short answer
A sprained wrist can feel painful, tender, swollen, stiff, weak, or painful when you grip or move it.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common sensations
- Pain, tenderness, swelling, stiffness, or weakness
- Movement that may hurt
- Gripping, turning, bending, or pushing
What these sensations may mean
A sprain involves stretched or injured ligaments, the strong bands that help hold wrist bones together. Pain may be focused near the joint and can increase when you turn your palm, bend the wrist, push up from a chair, or hold an object. Bruising can appear, although its absence does not rule out a sprain. Wrist pain can also occur with a fracture or another injury, so symptoms alone cannot confirm the cause.
What you can do now
Stop the activity that caused the pain and rest the wrist. Keep it raised when practical, and use a covered cold pack for short periods to help with swelling. Avoid forceful gripping, massage over a fresh injury, and heat during the early swollen phase. A clinician may recommend [Splinting](/treatments/trauma-and-fracture-care/splinting/) to limit movement. Once pain settles, [Physiotherapy](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/physiotherapy/) can help restore movement and strength safely.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt medical assessment if the wrist looks deformed, pain is severe, swelling is rapidly increasing, or you cannot move the hand or fingers normally. Seek urgent help for numbness, tingling, unusual coldness, or blue or pale fingers. If discomfort persists or daily tasks remain difficult, a clinician can examine the wrist and decide whether imaging is needed. See [Wrist Pain](/symptoms/wrist-pain/) for related symptom guidance.
Questions for your doctor
Could this be a fracture or a ligament injury? Which movements should I avoid, and when can I begin gentle exercises? Would a splint help, and what warning signs should bring me back sooner?

Questions people ask
Can a wrist sprain cause bruising?
Yes. Bruising may occur after ligament injury, but not having bruising does not exclude a sprain.
Can I move a sprained wrist?
Gentle movement may be suitable later, but avoid movements that increase pain and obtain advice if movement is very limited.
