What causes urinary urgency?

A urinary tract infection can inflame the bladder lining, causing a sudden need to urinate, often with burning or frequent small amounts. Caffeine, alcohol and fizzy drinks may irritate the bladder in some people. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia can narrow the urine outlet, leaving the bladder less fully emptied and creating repeated urges. Prostatitis may cause urgency with pelvic discomfort, painful urination or fever. Constipation, pregnancy, some medicines and conditions that increase urine production can also contribute. Urgency by itself does not identify one cause.

Note when urgency occurs, how much urine passes, what you drink, whether leakage happens and whether pain or fever is present. Keep fluids steady rather than repeatedly delaying drinks or drinking large amounts at once. Reduce a suspected irritant for a short period and see whether symptoms change. Arrange a medical review if urgency persists, disrupts sleep or returns frequently; urine testing and an examination may clarify the cause.

Seek prompt care for urgency with fever, chills, side or back pain, blood in urine, vomiting, severe pelvic pain or difficulty passing urine. Sudden confusion, severe weakness or new neurological symptoms require urgent assessment.
