What causes slurred speech?

Speech may sound unclear when the muscles used for the lips, tongue, throat, or breathing are weak or poorly coordinated. A stroke can affect the brain areas or nerve pathways that control speech; a transient ischaemic attack can produce similar symptoms that improve. Bell's palsy can weaken one side of the face and alter articulation. Low blood sugar may cause confusion, weakness, or difficulty speaking. Alcohol and some medicines can slow coordination. The symptom itself does not identify one cause, so timing and accompanying signs matter.

If speech changed suddenly, note when it was last normal and seek emergency help. Do not drive yourself. If diabetes is possible, check blood sugar if a meter is available and follow your agreed hypo plan, while arranging medical advice. For a gradual or recurring change, book a clinical assessment and bring a list of medicines, supplements, and recent illnesses. A clinician may check facial movement, strength, coordination, speech, and blood glucose.

Treat sudden slurred speech as an emergency, especially with facial drooping, arm or leg weakness, numbness, confusion, trouble understanding, vision change, severe headache, dizziness, or loss of balance. Symptoms that disappear still need urgent assessment because a transient ischaemic attack can be brief. Call local emergency services immediately rather than waiting to see whether the speech settles.

Ask what findings point to a neurological cause, whether your medicines can affect speech, and which warning signs should prompt emergency help. Tell the clinician whether the change began suddenly, fluctuates, follows a missed meal, or occurs with facial or limb symptoms.
