What causes placenta accreta?

Short answer
Placenta accreta develops when the placenta attaches too deeply to the uterine wall, often where the uterus has scar tissue.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Placental attachment
- The placenta grows more deeply into the uterine wall than usual.
- Planning
- Specialist maternity planning helps prepare for birth and possible bleeding.
How placenta accreta develops
Normally, the placenta attaches to the inner lining of the uterus and separates after birth. With placenta accreta, the boundary between the lining and the uterine muscle is altered, allowing placental tissue to grow more firmly into the wall. A previous Caesarean Section is a recognised contributor because it can leave a uterine scar. Risk can also relate to placenta previa or other procedures and conditions that affect the uterine lining. Some people develop placenta accreta without an obvious risk factor.
What to do next
If scans suggest placenta accreta, care is usually coordinated by an obstetric team with experience in high-risk pregnancy and birth. Ultrasound is commonly used to assess placental position and features; further imaging may be considered. The team plans the timing and place of birth, blood availability and support for possible bleeding. Keep scheduled appointments and tell the maternity team promptly about bleeding, pain or contractions.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity unit urgently for any vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal pain, regular contractions, dizziness, faintness or reduced fetal movement. Do not wait for a routine appointment when bleeding is heavy or you feel unwell. Emergency assessment is needed if symptoms suggest significant blood loss or labour.
Questions for your doctor
Where is my placenta and what did the scan show? How will my birth plan account for possible bleeding? Which hospital team will care for me, and what symptoms require immediate attendance?

Questions people ask
Did I cause placenta accreta?
No. It can occur with or without recognised risk factors, and a person should not blame themselves.
Can placenta accreta be seen before birth?
Ultrasound can identify features that raise concern, although the maternity team interprets scans alongside your history and examination.
