What causes irritability?

Short answer

Irritability may be caused by poor sleep, stress, hunger, pain, medication effects, or changes in mood and attention.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What irritability can mean

A short temper can follow disrupted sleep or ongoing pressure at home or work. Insomnia may leave the brain less able to regulate emotions. Irritability can also accompany anxiety, depression, burnout, or ADHD, particularly when concentration, motivation, or worry has changed at the same time. Going for long periods without food may contribute to shakiness, sweating, hunger, and irritability, as can some illnesses or medicines. The symptom alone cannot identify one cause.

What you can do

Notice when the feeling appears and record sleep, meals, caffeine, stress, pain, and any new medicine. Regular meals, fluids, movement, and a consistent wind-down routine may help. Avoid making major decisions during an angry episode; step away, breathe slowly, and return to the conversation when calmer. If sleep is the main problem, review insomnia management options with a clinician. Persistent or disruptive irritability deserves an assessment of physical health, mood, sleep, and medicines.

When to seek care

Arrange medical advice if irritability lasts, repeatedly affects relationships or work, or appears with low mood, loss of interest, excessive worry, poor concentration, or very little sleep. Seek urgent help for thoughts of self-harm, thoughts of harming someone else, severe confusion, hallucinations, or a sudden major change in behaviour. If episodes come with sweating, shaking, weakness, or faintness, seek prompt assessment, especially if you have diabetes or take glucose-lowering medicine.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your sleep, medicines, mood, blood sugar, or another health problem could be contributing, and what information to track before follow-up.

Yes. Disrupted or insufficient sleep can make emotional reactions harder to regulate during the day.
