What Causes Hypopigmentation?

Short answer

Hypopigmentation is caused by reduced melanin production or loss of pigment cells, often after inflammation, infection, injury, or a skin condition such as atopic dermatitis or tinea versicolor.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why skin can look lighter

Melanin gives skin much of its colour. A patch may look lighter when pigment production temporarily slows after eczema, a scrape, burn, or other inflammation. Some superficial fungal conditions can alter pigment and leave lighter spots, sometimes with fine scale. Other causes affect pigment cells more directly. The pattern matters: patches may be isolated or widespread, smooth or scaly, stable or gradually changing. Lighter skin after inflammation can remain visible for a while even after the original rash has settled, especially when surrounding skin becomes more tanned.

Practical next steps

Avoid scratching and treat active irritation gently with fragrance-free products. Use sunscreen on exposed areas so surrounding skin does not tan more strongly and increase contrast. Do not apply steroid, antifungal, bleaching, or other medicated products without guidance, because the wrong treatment can obscure the cause or irritate the skin. A clinician may examine the surface, distribution, and scale to decide whether a condition such as atopic dermatitis or tinea versicolor is involved and whether treatment is needed.

When to arrange an assessment

Seek medical advice when patches spread, multiply, become sharply defined, develop scale or itch, or involve hair or mucous membranes. Arrange prompt review for rapid change, pain, sores, bleeding, or signs of infection. Assessment is also useful when the colour change persists after an injury or rash has healed, because several conditions can look alike in photographs.

Questions for your doctor

Is the lighter area post-inflammatory, scaly, or related to a pigment-cell disorder? Should I use an antifungal or anti-inflammatory treatment? How should I protect the area while its colour is changing?

Questions people ask

Can eczema leave lighter patches?

Yes. Atopic dermatitis and the inflammation or scratching around it can leave lighter-looking areas after the active rash improves.

Does every light patch mean a fungal infection?

No. Tinea versicolor is one possibility, but irritation, injury, eczema, and other pigment changes can appear lighter too.
