What should you know about a welt-like rash?

A welt is a raised area that may be red, skin-coloured, itchy, or warm. Hives can appear suddenly and individual welts may change shape or location. Pressure, heat, infection, food, medicine, or another trigger may be involved, but the cause is not always identifiable. A persistent scaly rash may instead fit Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Psoriasis, or Ringworm. Rash in folds can occur with Intertrigo, while intense night-time itch may prompt consideration of Scabies. A photograph and timeline help distinguish these patterns.

Keep the skin cool, wear loose clothing, and avoid rubbing or scratching. Pause newly introduced soaps, cosmetics, or supplements until a clinician or pharmacist reviews the situation. Note foods, medicines, exercise, pressure, heat, and insect exposure before each flare. A pharmacist can advise whether an antihistamine is appropriate for itch; check first if you are pregnant, treating a child, or taking other medicines. Do not apply a product that has previously caused burning or swelling.

Call emergency services immediately for swelling of the lips, tongue, mouth, or throat, breathing difficulty, wheezing, faintness, or trouble swallowing. Seek urgent medical assessment for a painful or blistering rash, skin peeling, purple spots, fever, or sores in the mouth or eyes. Arrange a routine appointment when welts recur, last longer than expected, disturb sleep, leave bruising, or do not settle with simple measures. A clinician can examine the pattern and review possible triggers.
