The fingertip device uses light to estimate oxygen saturation in the blood and displays a pulse rate. Readings can be affected by cold fingers, movement, poor circulation, nail products, bright light, or an incorrectly positioned sensor. A number that differs from your usual reading deserves context: consider how you feel, whether the result repeats after rest, and whether the device is securely placed. The device does not diagnose the reason for a change.

Rest quietly, warm your hand, and keep the finger still. Place the oximeter as directed, wait for the display to settle, and record the oxygen estimate, pulse, time, and symptoms. Repeat once if the result seems unexpected, checking the fit and signal. Follow any personal plan given by your clinician. Do not delay care because a home reading looks reassuring when you are visibly struggling to breathe.

Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pain, fainting, new confusion, or extreme drowsiness, regardless of the display.
