Weight loss and compression garments

Short answer
Compression garments do not cause fat loss; they apply controlled pressure to support swelling management and body comfort.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main purpose
- Support swelling management, not fat loss
- Best first step
- Professional assessment and accurate fitting
What compression garments are for
A compression garment is a close-fitting sleeve, stocking, glove or other item designed to apply graduated pressure. It may help limit fluid accumulation in a swollen limb and support movement of lymph fluid when recommended by a trained clinician. It does not dissolve fat, replace nutrition or exercise, or make weight loss happen by itself.
After cancer treatment, swelling can relate to lymphoedema. The right garment depends on the body area, swelling pattern, skin condition, movement and treatment plan. See [Compression Garment](/materials/compression-garment/) and [Lymphoedema Therapy](/treatments/survivorship-and-rehabilitation/lymphoedema-therapy/).
Using one safely
Ask a lymphoedema specialist to measure and fit the garment. Put it on as instructed, check that it lies flat without folds, and inspect the skin after removal. Wash and replace it according to the maker's guidance so its pressure remains consistent.
Do not tighten, cut or layer garments without advice. Pair prescribed compression with gentle movement, skin care and the rest of your treatment plan. If the garment causes numbness, colour change, rubbing, pain or increased swelling, remove it and contact the care team.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for sudden one-sided swelling with chest pain, shortness of breath or coughing blood. Contact your clinician promptly for a hot, red, painful area, fever, rapidly increasing swelling, broken skin or a garment that causes persistent numbness or colour change. These signs may need assessment before compression continues.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether compression is suitable for your circulation and skin, which garment and pressure to use, and how long to wear it. Ask who should measure you, how to put it on, when to replace it, and what symptoms mean you should stop and call.
Questions people ask
Will a compression garment make me lose weight?
No. It may temporarily change the shape or feel of a swollen area, but it does not remove body fat.
Can anyone wear compression?
Not necessarily. Circulation, skin and swelling factors affect suitability, so obtain clinical advice and a proper fitting.
