Weekly growth scans

A growth scan measures parts of the baby, estimates growth, checks the placenta and amniotic fluid, and may assess blood flow through the umbilical cord or other vessels. Repeating scans lets the team compare a pattern over time rather than relying on one measurement. Weekly appointments may be suggested when growth, blood pressure, fluid, placenta function, or another pregnancy factor needs close observation. An estimate is not the same as a direct weighing, and measurements can vary with position and technique.

Follow the instructions from your maternity unit; many growth scans need no special preparation. Take your pregnancy notes and ask how the result will affect follow-up, monitoring, or timing of birth. The sonographer may place gel on your abdomen and move a probe across the skin. Most of the appointment is observational, although you may be asked to change position. A 3D/4D ultrasound is different from the standard measurements used to monitor growth and wellbeing.

Do not wait for the next scan if you notice reduced or changed fetal movements, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, severe headache, vision changes, or sudden swelling. Contact your maternity team for advice the same day. A scan is one part of care; symptoms and other checks may need attention between appointments.
