Ways to get syphilis

The sore may be on the genitals, anus, rectum, lips, or mouth and can be difficult to notice. Transmission can occur when skin or mucous membranes contact the sore, even if penetration does not happen. Syphilis can also pass from a pregnant person to the developing baby. A person may have no obvious symptoms, so appearance alone cannot rule infection in or out.

Arrange STI Screening if you have had contact with a partner who has syphilis, a new or multiple sexual partners, or a sore, rash, or other concerning change. Until you have medical advice, avoid sexual contact or use barriers consistently; barriers reduce exposure but may not cover every affected area. Tell recent partners if a clinician confirms infection so they can seek assessment. Syphilis is treated with prescribed Antibiotic Treatment.

Seek prompt medical advice after a known exposure, or if you notice a painless sore, a widespread rash, swollen glands, or eye, hearing, or neurological symptoms. Pregnancy makes timely assessment especially important. Urgent care is needed for sudden vision changes, severe headache, confusion, or weakness.

Ask which tests are needed, when testing should be repeated after exposure, whether partners need assessment, and when sexual contact can safely resume.
