Waterproof Cast for a Broken Hand: What to Know

A water-compatible cast usually combines a suitable outer material with a liner that lets water pass through and drain. It is different from wrapping an ordinary cast in plastic. Your clinician must confirm that the fracture, skin, wound, and cast design are appropriate. A distal radius fracture, often described as a broken wrist, may be treated with casting, reduction, or fixation depending on alignment and stability.

Water resistance does not make the cast indestructible. A wet liner that stays damp, develops an odour, rubs the skin, or loses its shape needs review.

Follow the specific instructions for bathing, swimming, and drying. After water exposure, let water drain fully, gently press out moisture with a clean towel, and use only the drying method recommended by your care team. Do not insert objects under the cast, trim its edges, or alter the padding. Keep the hand elevated when swelling is prominent and move the free fingers as instructed. Attend scheduled imaging or fracture reviews.

Contact your care team promptly for worsening pain, increasing hand swelling, numbness, tingling, pale or blue fingers, inability to move the fingers, a cracked or loose cast, or skin irritation. Urgent assessment is needed if fingers become cold or severely discoloured, or if pain and pressure rise quickly.

Ask whether your exact cast can get wet, how to dry its liner, when it may be removed or changed, which finger movements are safe, and whether hand therapy will be needed after immobilisation.
