Water breaking after a membrane sweep

A membrane sweep separates the membranes around the baby from the cervix. It can be followed by cramping, a small amount of blood-streaked mucus, or changes that suggest labour is approaching. A sudden gush or ongoing trickle of watery fluid may instead mean the membranes have ruptured. Fluid can be difficult to distinguish from urine or normal discharge, so an assessment may be needed.

Use a sanitary pad rather than a tampon and note when the wetness began, its colour, smell, and whether it continues. Avoid intercourse and putting anything into the vagina until a clinician advises you. Keep your maternity notes available, and call the maternity unit even if contractions have not started. Follow their instructions about coming in for an examination.

Contact maternity care urgently if the fluid is green or brown, bleeding is more than light spotting, you have severe or constant abdominal pain, fever, feel unwell, or notice reduced baby movements. Call emergency services for heavy bleeding, collapse, or difficulty breathing. Do not wait for contractions if you think the waters have broken.
