What should you know about warm rash on leg?

Contact dermatitis may appear where a product, plant, adhesive, or fabric touched the skin. Heat rash follows sweating and occlusion. Atopic dermatitis can be dry and itchy, while psoriasis often produces persistent defined plaques. Ringworm may have a scaly border, and scabies can cause intense itch in more than one body area. Intertrigo is more likely in a moist fold. These clues do not replace an examination.

Gently clean and dry the leg, avoid friction, and choose loose clothing. Do not scratch, shave over, or apply several new creams to the area. Marking the edge lightly can help you notice whether redness is expanding, but do not delay care if it is rapidly changing. Keep a list of new medicines and exposures for the clinician.

Arrange urgent assessment for rapidly spreading redness or warmth, increasing pain, swelling, fever, pus, red streaks, or feeling faint. A rash with facial swelling, breathing difficulty, blisters, skin peeling, or mouth or eye involvement requires emergency help. A persistent or recurrent rash also deserves a planned review.

Ask whether the location and edge suggest dermatitis, heat rash, ringworm, or another cause, and whether a medicine or cream could be contributing.
