Vulvar itching on one side: what to know

A single area may be exposed to friction, shaving, a product, moisture or scratching. Contact Dermatitis can follow a local trigger, while Atopic Dermatitis, Psoriasis and Lichen Planus can create an itchy, scaly, pale or thickened patch. A Skin Yeast Infection can cause redness and soreness, although the pattern is not enough to diagnose it. A clinician can inspect the skin and check nearby tissue.

Stop new scented washes, wipes, powders and topical products; wash gently and dry without rubbing. Wear loose underwear and avoid scratching or shaving the area until it settles. Photographing a visible change can help show how it evolves. Book an assessment if the itch persists, returns, or has a visible patch, lump, crack or sore.

Seek prompt care for bleeding, an ulcer, rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, fever, pus, a new hard area, or difficulty urinating. Do not wait for self-care to work when the skin is changing or the symptom is steadily worsening.
