What should you know about vulvar itching?

Vulvar itching can affect the outer skin, the folds, or the entrance to the vagina. Irritation from soaps, wipes, pads, sweat, or friction is common, but inflammation and infection can also cause it. A clinician may need to inspect the skin and ask about discharge, products, sexual contact, medicines, and symptoms elsewhere.

Contact Dermatitis can follow exposure to a fragranced or irritating product. Atopic Dermatitis and Asteatotic Eczema can make skin dry and itchy. Skin Yeast Infection may cause soreness and moisture-related irritation. Lichen Planus or Psoriasis can alter the skin surface, while Scabies can cause intense itching and affect close contacts. Hives may cause raised itchy welts that come and go. The symptom alone cannot identify one condition.

Rinse with lukewarm water, pat dry, and use loose cotton underwear. Stop new fragranced washes, sprays, powders, and wipes until the skin settles. Avoid scratching; a cool compress can help. Do not repeatedly use antifungal, steroid, or antiseptic products without advice, because the wrong product can mask the cause or irritate the area. Arrange a review if the itch persists or returns.

Seek prompt care for sores, blisters, marked swelling, bleeding, severe pain, fever, unusual discharge, pain when urinating, or a new area of skin thickening or colour change. Get advice sooner if you are pregnant, immunocompromised, or the itching is stopping sleep.
