What should you know about VRA audiometry?

Short answer

VRA audiometry is a child-friendly hearing assessment that links sounds with visual rewards to measure responses to different pitches.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What happens during VRA

During VRA, a child sits with a parent or hearing professional and is presented with sounds through speakers or earphones. When the child turns toward a sound, a light or animated toy may be shown as a reward. The clinician observes these responses and records the softest sounds noticed at several pitches.

Results can help show whether hearing differs between ears or across pitches. They may also guide further testing. Earwax Buildup can affect hearing and may need examination. Dizziness, fluctuating hearing, or ringing may need assessment for conditions such as Meniere's Disease.

Preparing your child

Bring your child rested and allow time to become familiar with the room. Explain that the activity is a listening game, without promising a particular result. A hearing professional may change the task for age, attention, or developmental needs, and may combine VRA with an ear examination or other checks.

Keep a note of infections, ear pain, delayed responses to speech, or concerns about language development. Share previous hearing results and tell the clinician if your child uses hearing devices. Follow-up may include another assessment or a Hearing Test suited to the child’s age.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt advice for sudden hearing change, severe ear pain, discharge, new balance problems, or a child who is difficult to wake. A routine appointment is appropriate for repeated concerns about speech, listening, or responses to everyday sounds.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what the response pattern shows, whether both ears were assessed, and whether middle-ear fluid or wax could affect the result. Ask what follow-up is needed and how hearing findings may relate to communication or classroom support.
