What should you know about volumetric spirometer?

Short answer

A volumetric spirometer records the volume of air you inhale and exhale during a structured breathing test.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding the recording

The instrument is connected to a mouthpiece. As you breathe, it captures how much air moves and produces a recording that can be reviewed with your clinical history. The clinician may assess a relaxed breath and then ask for a deep inhalation followed by a fast, complete exhalation. The recording can help investigate breathlessness, wheeze, or persistent cough and can contribute to monitoring known lung conditions.

The result is not a diagnosis on its own. Body position, effort, coughing, a poor mouthpiece seal, and recent respiratory illness can affect the tracing. Several attempts may be needed. Forceful exhalation can leave you briefly breathless or light-headed, so tell the tester immediately if you need to stop.

Making the test useful

Check the appointment instructions about inhalers and other medicines. Wear loose clothing, avoid smoking before testing, and bring your medicines or a written list. Follow the tester's demonstration rather than rushing. Keep your lips firmly around the mouthpiece, inhale as instructed, and continue exhaling until told to stop. Rest between attempts and mention any chest discomfort or dizziness.

When not to wait

Seek clinical advice for breathlessness that is new, persistent, or worsening, especially when it interrupts sleep or ordinary tasks. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, collapse, confusion, or chest pain. Testing is for assessment and should not replace urgent care when symptoms are severe.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what the volume tracing shows, whether the test quality was adequate, and whether another breathing test is needed. Ask how your medicines may affect the result and what follow-up symptoms should trigger an earlier appointment.

Questions people ask

Can a volumetric spirometer diagnose every lung problem?

No. It provides useful breathing measurements, but diagnosis may also require history, examination, and other tests.

What if I cough during the test?

Tell the tester; coughing can interrupt a manoeuvre and you may be asked to repeat it after resting.
