What should you know about a Vitalograph handheld spirometer?

The device records breathing measurements while you take a full breath in and then blow out through a mouthpiece. A clinician may look at the volume exhaled and the speed of the exhalation together. These results can help assess airflow and may be compared with expected values or with your own earlier readings.

A handheld unit is useful in a clinic, community setting or another supervised location because it is compact and can display or store results. The device measures airflow; it does not by itself identify the cause of an abnormal result or confirm a diagnosis. Technique, effort, posture and the quality of the seal around the mouthpiece can all affect the result.

Wear comfortable clothing and follow the clinician’s instructions about medicines before testing. Sit or stand as advised, keep the mouthpiece between your teeth, close your lips around it and breathe in fully. Blow out as hard and fast as you can for as long as instructed, then rest between attempts. Several efforts are often needed so the team can check whether the results are consistent.

Tell the clinician if coughing, chest discomfort, dizziness or difficulty sealing your lips interrupts an attempt. Ask whether a nose clip is needed and whether the test will be repeated after an inhaled medicine. Do not share a disposable mouthpiece, and follow the service’s cleaning instructions for any reusable parts.

Spirometry should be postponed or adapted if you are acutely unwell, have severe breathlessness, feel faint or cannot perform the manoeuvre safely; contact the testing service for advice. Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, fainting, new confusion or chest pain that is severe or does not settle.

A concerning reading is not the only reason to seek help. Arrange clinical review when breathlessness, wheezing, persistent cough or reduced exercise tolerance is new, worsening or interfering with daily activities, even if a previous handheld result seemed reassuring.

You could ask: What do my measurements show about airflow? Was my technique acceptable? Should I repeat the test or have formal spirometry? Do any medicines need to be adjusted before testing? What symptoms should prompt earlier review? How will these results fit with my examination and other tests?
