What should you know about virtual otoscope?

An otoscope is a device used to look inside the ear canal and towards the eardrum. A virtual version may include a small camera connected to a phone or another device. During a remote appointment, the images can help a clinician review visible changes such as redness, swelling, wax or fluid. Image quality, the camera angle and the amount of wax can limit what can be seen, so the device does not replace every part of an in-person examination.

The clinician may combine the image with symptoms, hearing changes, temperature, recent illness and any ear treatment already tried. A normal-looking image does not explain every cause of ear pain or reduced hearing.

Use the device only as instructed and keep the tip clean. Do not push it into the ear, use it to remove wax or continue if it causes pain, dizziness or distress. A child may need a calm adult to help them stay still; a child health consultation can provide age-appropriate guidance. Have the symptom timeline and medication list ready, and describe whether one or both ears are affected.

Seek prompt medical advice for severe or worsening ear pain, new hearing loss, blood or pus from the ear, marked swelling around the ear, severe dizziness, or a child who appears very unwell. Urgent care is also appropriate when an object has entered the ear or an injury may have damaged it. Do not delay assessment while trying to obtain a clearer image.
