What should you know about violent hiccups?

A hiccup begins when the diaphragm contracts suddenly and the vocal cords close. A large meal, fizzy drinks, alcohol, swallowing air or emotional stress can irritate the reflex. Acid reflux and gastritis may also be associated with repeated hiccups. Less commonly, medication effects or problems affecting the chest, abdomen or nervous system can contribute, so the pattern matters.

Sit upright, eat slowly and take small sips of water. Avoid large meals, fizzy drinks and alcohol while symptoms are active. Do not use frightening methods, choke yourself or hold your breath for a prolonged period. Note when the episode began, possible food or medicine triggers, and whether it affects sleep, eating or breathing.

Arrange medical review when hiccups keep returning, interfere with sleep or eating, or continue long enough to cause exhaustion or dehydration. Seek urgent help for hiccups with severe chest or abdominal pain, breathing difficulty, confusion, weakness, repeated vomiting or inability to swallow.

Ask whether reflux, gastritis, medicines or another condition could be contributing, whether treatment is needed, and which warning symptoms should prompt urgent care.
