An episiotomy is a deliberate cut in the perineum, the area between the vaginal opening and anus, made during some births. Vicryl is placed in layers to close the vaginal lining, muscle, and skin as needed. The material is designed to break down in the body, so routine removal is generally not needed. Pulling, soreness, bruising, and a tight feeling can occur while the wound settles.

Keep the area gently clean and dry, change pads regularly, and wash your hands before and after toileting. Rinse with lukewarm water if wiping is uncomfortable, then pat rather than rub. Use prescribed pain relief as directed and avoid inserting anything into the vagina until your maternity clinician says healing allows it. Rest, prevent constipation with fluids and fibre if suitable, and attend the postnatal review so healing and comfort can be checked.
