Vertigo While Driving: What You Should Know

If vertigo starts while driving, slow down safely, pull over, and do not continue until the spinning has fully settled and you can focus normally. Signal early, move away from traffic if possible, and ask someone else to drive or arrange a ride. Do not rely on opening a window, turning up music, or trying to drive through the episode.

Vertigo is a false sensation that you or your surroundings are moving, often spinning. Driving can intensify the problem because the eyes, inner ear, and brain are processing rapid movement and changing visual cues. Episodes may be linked with an inner-ear balance disorder such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo or Meniere's disease, or with migraine. A middle-ear infection can also disturb balance. The symptom alone does not identify one cause, so the pattern matters: note whether it follows head movement, comes with hearing change or ear pressure, or occurs with headache, light sensitivity, nausea, or other neurological symptoms.

Rest somewhere safe and keep your head movements gentle until your balance returns. Avoid driving, cycling, heights, and machinery while symptoms or visual instability remain. Arrange a medical assessment if vertigo is new, keeps returning, lasts longer than expected, or affects work and daily activities. Keep a brief record of timing, triggers, hearing symptoms, headache, vomiting, recent illness, and medicines; this can help a clinician decide whether examination, hearing assessment, or treatment such as the Epley manoeuvre is appropriate.

Seek emergency help if vertigo comes with trouble speaking, facial drooping, weakness or numbness on one side, fainting, a sudden severe headache, new double vision, chest pain, or difficulty walking that does not settle. Get prompt medical advice for sudden hearing loss, severe ongoing vomiting, a high fever with a stiff neck, or vertigo after a head injury. Do not drive yourself to care; call emergency services or ask another person to take you.

Ask what may be triggering the episodes and whether your symptoms fit an inner-ear, migraine-related, medication-related, or another pattern. Ask when it is safe to resume driving, which warning signs require urgent help, whether you need a hearing or balance assessment, and whether a specific movement or medicine could help.
