VBAC labour: signs, monitoring and preparation

The team may monitor the fetal heart rate continuously and review your pain, contractions and progress. Your earlier operative report, current pregnancy and any induction decision help shape the plan. Labour can end in vaginal birth or caesarean birth, depending on findings.

Ask your maternity unit exactly where to go and whom to call when labour begins or your waters break. Pack your records and discuss pain relief, mobility, monitoring and the role of your birth companion. Know the backup plan, including how the team would explain a recommendation for caesarean birth. Rest, hydrate as advised and follow personalised antenatal guidance.

Contact the maternity unit promptly for regular contractions, ruptured membranes, vaginal bleeding or reduced fetal movement. Seek emergency help for sudden severe abdominal pain, faintness, heavy bleeding or a major change in contraction pattern. Do not wait for a calculator or online checklist to settle whether assessment is needed.

Ask how labour will be monitored, whether induction is suitable, what pain relief is available, how your scar history is documented and which symptoms would prompt urgent surgery. Confirm how quickly the operating team can be assembled if the plan changes.
