VBAC childbirth: what to expect

The process follows the usual stages of labour, but your prior uterine surgery influences planning. Clinicians consider the incision, previous births, the baby’s presentation, placenta and your wellbeing. Monitoring helps the team respond to changes in fetal heart rate, contractions or your symptoms. If vaginal birth becomes unsuitable, an urgent caesarean may be recommended.

Discuss VBAC during antenatal visits and share your previous records. Confirm where you should go when labour starts and whether anaesthesia, theatre staff and newborn care are immediately available. Talk through pain relief, movement, fetal monitoring and what happens if labour slows or induction is suggested. A clear backup plan can make decisions easier if circumstances change.

Contact your maternity unit for regular contractions, ruptured membranes, vaginal bleeding or fewer fetal movements. Seek urgent help for intense ongoing abdominal pain, marked weakness, heavy bleeding or feeling faint. These symptoms need examination and monitoring, regardless of what you hoped for or planned.

Ask whether your scar and current pregnancy support VBAC, how the baby will be monitored, which pain-relief choices are available, and when a caesarean would be recommended. Ask how your support person can be involved in decisions.
