VBAC after 3 C-sections: making sense of stories

After three operations, the team needs details from every operative report, not only the number of births. They may consider the uterine incision, healing or complications, reasons for each caesarean, other uterine procedures, placenta location, the baby's position and any medical conditions in this pregnancy.

A vaginal birth plan must include continuous assessment during labour and immediate access to surgical, anaesthetic and newborn support. A planned caesarean may be discussed as an alternative. Read more about Caesarean Section.

Ask for an antenatal review early enough to compare both birth routes thoughtfully. Take discharge summaries, operative notes and details of previous labour if you have them. Discuss whether your hospital can provide the monitoring and emergency response required, how labour would begin, and what would trigger a change to caesarean birth.

Online stories often leave out scar type, hospital resources and medical history. Use them to prepare questions rather than as a guide to what will happen to you.

Seek urgent maternity assessment for vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal pain, faintness, fluid loss, regular contractions or reduced fetal movement. In labour, report sudden worsening pain, heavy bleeding, feeling unwell or any concern raised by the monitoring team immediately.

Which uterine incisions were used in my previous operations? Do the operative notes show any complication that changes the options? Is VBAC available at this hospital after three caesareans? How will labour be monitored, and what is the backup plan if labour does not progress?
