What should you know about valley fever?

The infection is caused by Coccidioides, a fungus that lives in soil in some dry regions. Disturbed soil can release spores into the air. Many people have mild illness, while others develop a cough, chest discomfort, tiredness, fever, night sweats, or muscle aches. A rash or joint pain can also occur. Valley fever does not spread between people through ordinary contact.

Tell a clinician about recent travel, residence, dust exposure, and the timing of symptoms. Assessment may include an examination, chest imaging, or blood tests. Rest, fluids, and symptom relief may be suitable for a mild illness, but antifungal treatment is sometimes considered when symptoms are persistent, severe, or affecting someone with a higher risk of complications. Do not start leftover antifungal medicine without advice.

Arrange medical advice for a cough or fever that does not settle, worsening tiredness, or symptoms after substantial dust exposure. Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, fainting, blue lips, or a sudden severe decline. Earlier assessment is sensible during pregnancy or if immunity is reduced.
