Light bleeding can follow friction, dryness, or a sensitive area on the cervix. A clinician may offer a pelvic examination, pregnancy test, infection testing, cervical screening review, or imaging depending on your symptoms and history.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic or abdominal pain, dizziness, faintness, fever, or bleeding during a possible pregnancy. Prompt review is needed for bleeding that keeps returning, occurs after menopause, or comes with foul-smelling discharge, pain during sex, or unexplained weight change. Do not wait for another episode if a clinician has already advised follow-up.
