What should you know about a hearing test for tinnitus?

Tinnitus is the perception of sound without an external source. During an audiology assessment, you may listen to tones and indicate when you hear them. The results can show whether hearing is reduced and whether the change affects one or both ears.

The clinician may also ask about noise exposure, medicines, dizziness, ear blockage and the timing of the tinnitus. Earwax buildup and inner-ear conditions can be relevant, but a hearing test does not identify every cause by itself.

Tell the clinician whether the sound is one-sided, rhythmic, sudden or associated with hearing loss, dizziness or ear pain. Bring a list of medicines and mention recent loud-noise exposure. The test is usually completed in a quiet setting and does not require you to produce the sound you hear.

Seek prompt medical advice for sudden hearing loss, tinnitus after a head injury, severe dizziness, new weakness, facial symptoms or a sound that beats in time with your pulse. One-sided or persistent tinnitus also deserves assessment.

Ask what the hearing results mean, whether ear examination is needed, whether further tests are appropriate, and which changes should prompt urgent review.
