Can a UTI go away without antibiotics?

Burning or frequent urination can result from irritation, stones, sexually transmitted infections or other conditions as well as infection. A clinician considers symptoms, medical history and sometimes a urine test before deciding whether an antibiotic is suitable.

A previous prescription may not fit a new illness. Saving, sharing or stopping antibiotics early can delay appropriate care and cause avoidable side effects.

Contact a clinician if symptoms continue, recur or interfere with daily life. Drink normally unless you have fluid restrictions, and note fever, pain location, urine changes and medicines. Do not use leftover antibiotics.

Seek prompt care for fever, chills, side or back pain, vomiting, confusion, faintness, blood in the urine or rapid worsening. Arrange earlier assessment if pregnant, a child, an older adult or immunocompromised.

Ask whether your symptoms could have another cause, whether urine testing is useful, whether waiting is appropriate for you, and what change should trigger review.
