What should you know about using a TENS unit on the neck?

A TENS unit sends mild electrical impulses through adhesive electrodes on the skin. Some people use it to change pain signals or make muscle discomfort easier to manage while they move. It does not identify the cause of neck pain and does not correct a nerve, joint, disc, or muscle problem by itself.

The neck contains sensitive structures, so placement matters. Do not place electrodes over the front or sides of the throat, across the chest, on broken skin, or over an area with reduced sensation. A clinician or physiotherapist should show you a suitable arrangement.

Read the device instructions and start only with the settings recommended for you. Check the skin before and after use, keep the unit off while attaching or moving pads, and stop if stimulation causes burning, dizziness, palpitations, worsening pain, or unusual muscle contractions. Do not use it while driving, bathing, sleeping, or near water.

Arrange medical assessment for persistent or recurring neck pain, pain spreading into an arm, or pins and needles or weakness.
