US-guided breast biopsy: what to expect

You usually lie on your back or at a slight angle while the clinician uses ultrasound to locate the target. After cleaning the skin and giving local anaesthetic, a small needle takes samples through a tiny opening. You may hear a clicking sound or feel pressure, but tell the team if you feel pain. A marker may be left at the sampled site so it can be found on later imaging. The tissue goes to a laboratory; a biopsy result is a diagnosis step, not a conclusion based on the appearance of the lump alone.

Tell the breast team about medicines, allergies, bleeding problems, pregnancy or possible pregnancy. Follow their instructions about blood-thinning medicines rather than stopping anything yourself. Wear a supportive bra if advised, and use a cold pack wrapped in cloth for short periods if the area is tender. Keep the dressing clean and follow the service's instructions about bathing. Bruising and mild soreness can occur; ask how and when you will receive the laboratory result.

Contact the clinic if bleeding does not settle with firm pressure, the wound becomes increasingly red or swollen, pain is worsening, or you develop a fever or discharge. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe swelling, breathing difficulty or sudden collapse. A breast lump has many possible explanations; the biopsy is used to identify the tissue type and guide the next discussion.

Ask which area will be sampled, whether a marker is planned, how to manage medicines, when normal activity can resume, and how results will be explained. Ask what happens if the sample is inconclusive or needs comparison with imaging.
