What should you know about urethritis antibiotics?

Urethritis is inflammation of the tube that carries urine out of the body. It can cause burning urination, discharge, irritation, or discomfort, but symptoms alone cannot identify the infection. Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea are important possibilities; irritation, urinary infection, and other causes can also be involved.

A clinician may collect a urine sample or swab and ask about recent sexual contact, symptoms, allergies, and previous treatment. Antibiotics are selected to cover the suspected cause and then adjusted when results are available. Using an old prescription can miss the infection or make side effects more likely.

Arrange testing promptly and give the clinic a complete list of medicines and allergies. Take prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed and do not share them. Avoid sex, including oral sex, until the clinician confirms when sexual activity can resume; partners may need testing or treatment even if they have no symptoms. Return for review if discharge or burning does not improve as expected.

Seek urgent help for severe testicular or pelvic pain, fever, vomiting, inability to pass urine, a painful swollen joint, or rapidly worsening illness. Prompt care is also needed for eye pain, light sensitivity, or vision changes after genital symptoms, because infection can affect more than the urethra.

Ask which infections are being tested, when results will return, whether treatment is needed before results, and whether partners should attend. Confirm how to handle missed doses, side effects, and a persistent discharge or burning sensation.
