What should you know about upper shin pain when squatting?

Short answer
Upper shin pain when squatting often reflects load around the knee or shin, so modify depth and seek assessment if it persists.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why a squat may provoke it
As you lower into a squat, the ankle, knee, hip, and muscles along the shin work together to control movement. Pain at the upper shin can arise when the knee bends deeply, the knee moves inward, the heel lifts, or the load increases suddenly. A sharp pain after a twist or impact differs from a gradual ache that appears with repeated squats. A small, clearly tender area over the bone, pain with walking, or symptoms that remain after exercise should be checked rather than repeatedly tested.
Ways to modify the movement
Stop the set when pain becomes sharp or changes your movement. Try a shallower, slower squat only if it stays comfortable, and reduce added weight while symptoms are active. Keep the foot supported, avoid forcing the knees forward or inward, and use another pain-free exercise for conditioning. Cold therapy may soothe irritation after activity. If pain is persistent or precisely over the bone, arrange an examination because a stress fracture is one possibility. See [Shin Pain](/symptoms/shin-pain/) and [Stress Fracture](/conditions/stress-fracture/).
When to get help
Seek prompt care for swelling, bruising after an injury, inability to bear weight, increasing pain, pain at rest, or focal bone tenderness. Urgent assessment is appropriate if the leg is visibly deformed or the foot becomes numb, unusually cold, or discoloured.
Useful questions
Ask whether the pain is coming from the knee, shin bone, muscle, or tendon; which squat depth is appropriate; and whether you need imaging. Ask for a graded plan to rebuild strength, ankle mobility, and tolerance for loaded bending.

Questions people ask
Should I keep squatting if the pain is mild?
Only use a gentler range if it remains comfortable and does not worsen during or after exercise; stop if pain becomes sharp.
Can poor ankle movement affect upper shin pain?
Limited ankle movement can change how the knee and shin carry load, so an assessment of the whole movement may be helpful.
