What should you know about unilateral hand swelling?

Short answer
Unilateral hand swelling can reflect injury, inflammation, infection, or fluid build-up and needs context to assess.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Pattern
- Swelling affecting one hand has several possible causes.
- Observe
- Pain, warmth, redness, injury, movement, and finger sensation.
- Avoid
- Forceful movement and rings that become tight.
What one-sided swelling can mean
A recent fall, blow, twist, or overuse can irritate soft tissues or cause a fracture. A distal radius fracture may make the wrist and hand swell, often with tenderness and difficulty gripping. Joint inflammation can cause puffiness, warmth, stiffness, or pain in several finger joints; rheumatoid arthritis is one possible cause. Skin breaks, bites, or nail problems can allow infection, especially when redness, heat, drainage, or increasing tenderness develops. Tight jewellery can worsen pressure as swelling grows, so remove rings early if they slide off safely.
What to do now
Compare both hands and note when the change began, whether it is spreading, and whether movement or sensation has altered. Rest the hand from aggravating tasks, keep it raised when practical, and use a wrapped cool pack for short periods after a minor injury. Do not place ice directly on skin or force a painful joint. Arrange a clinical assessment if swelling persists, follows a significant injury, or limits use; an examination may determine whether imaging or other testing is needed.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent care for a visibly deformed hand or wrist, severe or rapidly worsening pain, blue or unusually pale fingers, new numbness, inability to move the fingers, an open wound, or fever with spreading redness. Remove rings if possible without force. After an injury, keep the hand supported in the position that feels safest and avoid trying to straighten a suspected fracture.
Questions to ask
Could the pattern of swelling suggest a fracture, joint inflammation, infection, or another cause? Do I need an X-ray or other test? Which movements should I limit, and when can I resume normal hand use? What changes should prompt a same-day review?
