Unexplained itching all over the body in winter

Cold outdoor air and indoor heating can reduce moisture around the skin. Long hot showers, harsh soaps, wool clothing, and frequent washing may further weaken the skin barrier. This can cause tightness, scaling, redness, tiny cracks, and itching across several areas, sometimes without an obvious rash.

Winter does not explain every case. Eczema, contact irritation, scabies, medication reactions, and conditions affecting the thyroid, liver, kidneys, or blood can also cause persistent itch. Itching is a common presentation of Hodgkin lymphoma, but itching by itself does not identify cancer. Vulvar itching has a different local pattern and needs its own examination.

Apply a thick fragrance-free moisturiser soon after a lukewarm bath or shower and repeat when the skin feels dry. Use gentle cleanser only where needed, choose soft breathable layers, and keep the bedroom comfortably cool. Avoid scratching when possible; a cool cloth can calm the urge. Arrange a medical appointment if symptoms continue despite skin care, spread, or interfere with sleep.

Get urgent help for facial swelling, breathing trouble, faintness, or a sudden blistering or peeling rash. Seek prompt review for persistent fever, drenching night sweats, unexplained weight loss, enlarged lumps, yellow skin, severe fatigue, or a new vulvar sore, bleeding, or colour change.
