What should you know about underlying osteomyelitis?

The infection may reach bone through the bloodstream, spread from nearby skin or soft tissue, or enter after an injury or operation. It can affect a limb, the spine, or another bone. Pain, tenderness, warmth, swelling, reduced movement, fever, or drainage from a wound can occur, although symptoms vary. A deeper infection may be present even when the skin change looks modest.

A clinician may review your history, examine the area, and arrange blood tests or imaging. If needed, a sample from the affected area helps identify the organism and select treatment. Diabetes, poor circulation, immune suppression, open wounds, and implanted hardware can change the assessment.

Arrange a timely medical review, especially if pain or swelling is increasing, a wound is not healing, or you have fever. Keep any wound clean and covered as advised, avoid squeezing drainage, and do not stop prescribed antibiotics early without speaking with the prescriber. Treatment may combine antibiotics with wound care, drainage, removal of infected tissue, or attention to an implant or bone problem. Seek urgent medical help for fever with worsening bone or wound pain, rapidly spreading redness or swelling, confusion, faintness, severe weakness, or new difficulty moving the limb. Go promptly if a wound opens over hardware or bone, or if pus or a foul-smelling discharge appears. These changes can signal a progressing infection and should not wait for a routine appointment.
