Underarm Intertrigo: What You Should Know

Short answer
Underarm intertrigo is inflammation in the armpit fold caused by moisture, friction, heat, or an overgrowth of yeast or bacteria.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common site
- The warm, moist fold of the armpit
- Typical sensations
- Itching, burning, soreness, or rawness
- First care step
- Clean gently and keep the fold dry
What underarm intertrigo means
The rash develops where skin touches skin and the fold stays warm or damp. It may appear red, brownish, sore, raw, itchy, or cracked. A burning feeling can become more noticeable after sweating, exercise, or rubbing from clothing. Scratching, deodorant, shaving, and fragranced products may further irritate the area.
Intertrigo is a pattern of inflammation rather than a single germ. Yeast can grow in the damaged, moist skin; this is related to cutaneous candidiasis. A clinician may distinguish infection from contact dermatitis, eczema, inverse psoriasis, or another cause by examining the border, surface, and nearby skin. A rash elsewhere can also be described as a skin rash, but its cause may differ.
What you can do
Gently wash the armpit, rinse away cleanser, and pat the fold dry rather than rubbing it. Change out of damp clothing promptly and choose loose, breathable fabric. Keep the fold dry, avoid scratching, and pause fragranced deodorants or newly introduced products until the skin settles. Do not share towels, and wash clothing that becomes sweaty.
Treatment depends on the cause. A clinician may recommend a topical antifungal treatment when yeast is suspected, or another medicine when inflammation or bacterial infection is more likely. Use products as directed and avoid applying a strong steroid cream to a suspected infection unless a clinician has specifically advised it, because it can alter the rash and allow infection to worsen. Prescription antiperspirant may be considered when persistent sweating keeps triggering the fold irritation.
When to seek care
Arrange a medical assessment if the rash is spreading, very painful, repeatedly returning, foul-smelling, oozing, or developing blisters, open sores, pus, or marked swelling. Seek urgent care for fever, rapidly worsening redness, severe tenderness, or feeling unwell. Medical review is also sensible if gentle drying and avoidance of irritants do not help, or if you have diabetes, reduced immunity, or another condition that makes skin infections harder to control.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the appearance suggests simple friction, yeast, bacteria, or a product reaction; which treatment is appropriate; how long to use it; and which deodorants, fabrics, or shaving habits should be avoided while the skin heals. Mention any recent medication, sweating pattern, recurrence, or rash in another skin fold.

Questions people ask
Can underarm intertrigo be caused by yeast?
Yes. Moisture and damaged skin can allow yeast to multiply, so a clinician may prescribe a topical antifungal treatment when the examination supports that cause.
Should you stop using deodorant with an underarm rash?
Pause fragranced or newly introduced deodorants while the skin is irritated. Your clinician can help identify whether a product reaction is contributing and advise when to restart or switch products.
