Under Top Lip Swollen: What It May Mean and What to Do

A small, localised swelling may come from biting the lip, a burn, a new cosmetic or oral-care product, or a blocked minor salivary gland. Tenderness, warmth, spreading redness, pus, or fever can point toward infection. Tooth pain or gum swelling makes a dental source more likely. Sudden swelling of the lip, tongue, mouth, or face can be angioedema, which may occur with hives or after food, medicine, or an insect sting. Angioedema is a condition that can affect deeper skin tissues and may become urgent when breathing or swallowing changes.

Avoid the suspected trigger and do not squeeze, pierce, or repeatedly touch the swollen area. Rinse gently with lukewarm water if a product or food may have irritated it. A cool compress held against the outside of the lip for short periods may ease discomfort. Keep track of when the swelling began, whether it is increasing, and any new foods, medicines, dental work, or cosmetics. A clinician or dentist can examine the lip, mouth, teeth, and gums and choose treatment based on the cause.

Seek emergency help immediately if swelling reaches the tongue or throat, or if you have trouble breathing, swallowing, speaking, or managing saliva. Get prompt medical assessment for rapidly increasing swelling, faintness, widespread hives, fever, severe pain, pus, or facial redness that is spreading. Arrange a routine appointment if the swelling keeps returning, lasts beyond a short period, or has no clear trigger.
