Short answer

Uncontrollable panic attacks feel intense but can be treated; new, severe, or unusual symptoms need medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What panic attacks can mean

A panic attack is a sudden surge of fear or alarm with body changes such as a racing heart, rapid breathing, trembling, sweating, dizziness, chest tightness, or numbness and tingling. Panic Disorder is diagnosed when recurrent attacks and ongoing concern or avoidance become a persistent problem. A panic attack can also occur with stress, another anxiety problem, a medicine, or a physical condition, so a first episode should not automatically be assumed to be panic.

During an attack, fast breathing can intensify tingling, light-headedness, and the feeling that something terrible is happening. The sensations are real even when the alarm system is misfiring. A clinician can distinguish panic symptoms from other causes by asking about timing, triggers, health history, and medicines.

What to do during an attack

Move to a quiet, safe place and remain with someone you trust if possible. Breathe gently and slowly, allowing the out-breath to be unhurried; do not force deep breaths into a paper bag. Name a few things you can see or feel to anchor attention in the present. Avoid driving until you feel settled. Afterward, record what happened, how long it lasted, sleep and caffeine patterns, and any substances or medicines involved. A GP consultation or mental health assessment can help create a plan.

When to seek care

Get urgent help for new or severe chest tightness, fainting, severe breathlessness, one-sided weakness, confusion, or symptoms that do not ease as expected. Seek immediate support if you may harm yourself or cannot stay safe. Arrange an appointment when attacks recur, cause avoidance, disrupt sleep, or lead to frequent reassurance seeking. Do not self-diagnose a first episode from symptoms alone.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your symptoms fit panic, what physical causes should be checked, and which talking treatments or medicines may help. Ask for a written plan for future attacks, including the warning signs that require urgent assessment.
