What should you know about ulcerative colitis right side pain?

Ulcerative colitis can cause cramping, tenderness, urgency, and diarrhoea when inflammation is active. The right side of the abdomen also contains bowel and nearby organs, so pain there may have causes unrelated to ulcerative colitis, including infection, gallbladder problems, urinary conditions, or inflammation elsewhere. Note whether the pain is steady or cramping, whether movement affects it, and whether it occurs with fever, vomiting, bleeding, or bowel changes. A clinician uses this pattern and an examination to decide what needs testing.

Contact your usual care team if right-sided pain is new, recurring, or not settling, especially with a change in stool frequency or blood. Continue prescribed ulcerative colitis medicine unless a clinician tells you otherwise, and drink fluids if you can. Avoid taking anti-inflammatory painkillers without advice because they may aggravate bowel symptoms in some people. Write down when the pain began, its severity, meals, bowel movements, and associated symptoms for your appointment.

Seek urgent help for sudden severe pain, a rigid or swollen abdomen, persistent vomiting, heavy bleeding, faintness, confusion, high fever, or inability to pass stool or gas. Get prompt medical advice if pain steadily worsens or is accompanied by marked weakness or dehydration.
