Ulcerative colitis and heartburn

Heartburn is a burning sensation behind the breastbone caused by stomach contents moving into the oesophagus. It may leave a sour taste or worsen after a meal or when lying down. Ulcerative colitis affects the colon and may cause urgency, diarrhoea, rectal bleeding, or lower abdominal pain. Heartburn does not tell you whether colitis is active, and colitis symptoms do not explain every episode of chest burning.

Some medicines, meal timing, alcohol, caffeine, and foods can aggravate heartburn. A symptom diary can record meals, body position, bowel activity, and treatment changes without relying on guesswork.

Try smaller meals, stay upright after eating, and avoid going to bed soon after a meal. Note personal triggers rather than removing many foods at once. Continue prescribed ulcerative colitis treatment unless a clinician tells you otherwise, and check before adding an antacid or acid-suppressing medicine.
