What should you know about ujian amniocentesis?

During amniocentesis, ultrasound is used to guide a fine needle through the abdomen and into the amniotic sac. A small fluid sample is taken for laboratory testing. The test may be discussed after a screening result, a family history, a previous pregnancy finding or an ultrasound concern. Screening estimates chance; amniocentesis can provide diagnostic information for the conditions included in the test. It cannot answer every question about a baby's health and does not replace routine pregnancy care.

Before deciding, ask which conditions will be tested, when results are expected and what each possible result could mean for your pregnancy. Your clinician may review your blood group, medicines and medical history. The needle insertion can feel uncomfortable, and mild cramping may follow. Rest according to the advice you receive, watch for changes and attend the results appointment. NIPT or chorionic villus sampling may be discussed as alternatives, but they answer different questions and are performed at different points in pregnancy.

Contact your maternity team urgently after amniocentesis if you have vaginal bleeding, fluid leaking from the vagina, strong or persistent abdominal pain, fever, chills or contractions. Seek emergency help if you feel very unwell, faint or short of breath. A small amount of temporary discomfort can occur, but worsening symptoms need assessment rather than waiting for test results.

Ask: Why is this test being offered? What exactly will the laboratory examine? How long will results take? What happens after an unclear or unexpected result? Which alternatives are suitable at this stage of pregnancy?
