What should you know about typhus fever?

Typhus can cause fever, chills, headache, tiredness, muscle aches, and sometimes a rash. Symptoms and severity vary between the different forms. A fever alone does not identify typhus: common illnesses such as a cold, COVID-19, or other infections can also cause fever. Exposure history matters, including travel, crowded living conditions, contact with body lice, or flea exposure.

Arrange medical assessment if fever persists, is worsening, or follows relevant travel or insect exposure. Tell the clinician about destinations, sleeping conditions, animal contact, bites, medicines, and the date symptoms started. Drink fluids if you can, rest, and follow the clinician's advice about fever relief. Do not share clothing, bedding, or towels when body lice are possible, and wash them appropriately.

Seek urgent help for confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty, severe headache, stiff neck, repeated vomiting, a rapidly spreading rash, or inability to keep fluids down. Fever after travel can have causes that need prompt treatment, so do not wait for a rash before seeking advice. A child, older adult, pregnant person, or someone with reduced immunity may need earlier review.
